It was traditionally used in luo cultural festivities like marriage, initiations, overnight funeral vigillance, after burial cultural cleansing ‘tero buru’ among others. Traditionally, ohangla music was only played by elderly men. Women were strictly allowed to participate in the dancing bit. The common instruments used were orutu/nyatiti, oyieke, ongeng’o , ajawa, bul and in some cases a traditional flute (asili).
